Volcanic blasts shaped these placid peaks above the calm waters of Lake Atitlan, where Indians gather tul reeds which they will eave into mats. Bordered by villages, some accessible only by boat, the 16-mile-long lake often turns into a maelstrom in late afternoon, when a giant wind called el chocomil pours off the mountains, imperiling anyone foolish enough to venture out.
